Vegan Chicago Style Italian Beef

Chicago is known for so much! One of the things that I love about Chicago is the food. This multicultural city provides food from all nationalities. Due to that, I have developed a craving for all kinds of food. One of them being the Chicago style Italian beef. Deep dish pizza, calzones, pizza puffs, pasta you name it. Their isn’t anything like it! The only thing is most of this food is prepared with animal based products. Since I’m plant based I’ve decided to veganify these delicious dishes. One of them being the Chicago Italian beef. I like mine dipped. hehehe! Grab your utensils, ingredients, and let’s EaT!

Vegan Chicago Style Italian Beef

Ingredients

3 packs of  Sweet Earth seitan strips

2 bags of frozen mixed peppers and onions or fresh green, red, yellow, orange peppers and  onions chopped ( white or yellow onions)

2 cups of sliced mushrooms

32oz  of Vegetable broth

1 cup of olive oil

2 cups of water

2 Tbsp of Better than bouillon

2 Tbsp of Thyme

2 Tbsp of Basil

2 Tbsp of Oregano

2 Tbsp of Pepper

1 Tsp of salt

2 Tbsp of garlic powder

2 Tbsp of minced garlic

2 Tbsp of onion powder

10 French Rolls

Optional: Jar of Giardiniera and provolone or cheddar cheese

The Au Jus

Before we cook the seitan strips. We’ll cook the au jus. The au jus is the sauce that the Italian beef is dipped in. YUM! While we’re cooking the strips the juice will cook. First things first grab a stock pot and add half of the olive oil first, peppers, onions, and garlic.  Sautee the vegetables and until they’re soft and brown. Once they’re translucent almost add the vegetable broth. Use half of these ingredients: garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, basil , thyme, oregano, bouillon Stir these ingredients together and allow them to come to a boil. Cook for 20-30 minutes.

The Seitan Strips

Pour the other half of the olive oil into the pan.  Add the other half of these ingredients: peppers, onions, and garlic. Sautee these vegetables until they’re browned and soft. Once they’re soft and translucent add the seitan strips.  If they’re not cut into strips already. You can cut the seitan meat into strips yourself.  Add the other half of these ingredients: salt, pepper, thyme, basil, oregano, onion powder, garlic powder, bouillon, and water.  Continue sautéing the seitan strips and vegetables. Cover and cook for 20-30 min until the seitan strips are tender and browned.  Check on the strips periodically.  For best results allow the seitan strips to sit in the juices overnight. The flavor settles in and makes it taste even better! But, if you’re ready to eat it now. It is still good! Grab your bun, add the cheese, fill it up with the strips, and dip baby dip in the Au Jus! Add a tsp or more of giardiniera for a kick. Enjoy!
